This year, 2006, marks the 57th National Day in China. The link above includes all sorts of interesting facts. This holiday is like our July 4th holiday. It marks the founding of the People's Republic of China. The Chinese celebrate the holiday by taking a full week off!
How did China's national day come?
The Council of the Central People's Government at its fourth meeting adopted the resolution on the National Day of the PRC on December 2, 1949.
The First Plenary Session of the Chinese People's Political Consultative Conference (CPPCC) passed the proposal that the Central Government shall establish October1 as the National Day of the PRC to replace the old on October 10.
The Council of the Central People's Government believed that the proposal conformed to the reality of history and represented the will of people, and as a result decided to take it.
The Council of the Central People's Government proclaimed: October 1, proclaiming the founding of the People's Republic of China, is adopted as the National Day of the PRC as of 1950.
On October 1 every year, the Chinese people celebrate anniversary of the founding of the PRC from then on.
